Water Damage on Walls SERVPRO was able to dry out room and repair damage.

The IICRC Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration (IICRC S500) is a procedural standard.

It is based on reliable restoration principles, research, and practical experience. In addition, there has been extensive consultation and information obtained from numerous sources.

These sources include, but are not necessarily limited to, the scientific community, the international, national, and regional trade associations serving the professional disaster restoration industry, chemical formulators, and equipment manufacturers, cleaning and restoration training schools, restoration service companies, the insurance industry, allied trades persons and others with specialized experience.

It is subject to further revision as developments occur in technology, testing, and processing procedures. The Fourth Edition of the IICRC S500 Standard and Reference Guide has been completely updated and rewritten with the best information and knowledge of the time.

Additional Chapters and Sections have been added to the S500 that have not been included previously. These areas include Building and Material Science, by Definition, and the Science of Drying, Limitations Complexities Complications, and Conflicts, Structural Restoration, HVAC, Contents Evaluation Restoration and Remediation, and Large or Catastrophic Restoration.

Also, note that Carpet Disengagement and Reinstallation have been moved back into the Appendix of the document. The IICRC S500 provides a specific set of practical standards for water damage restoration. It does not attempt to teach comprehensive water damage restoration procedures; rather it provides the foundation for basic principles of proper restoration practices. IICRC S500 does not attempt to include exhaustive performance characteristics or standards for the manufacture or installation of structural components, materials, and contents (personal property).

The IICRC S500 Standard and Reference Guide is presented using a two-part format: the standard itself and a supplementary reference guide. The procedural standard is featured in this first section, supported by the reference guide in the second section. The intent is to use the principles outlined in the reference guide as a tool to better understand and apply the standard itself.

However, the reference guide is not considered part of this standard.

Proper way to Dry out Basement due to Water Damage Drying out basement.

This is a summation of the general drying techniques after an area has experienced water damage. It is recommended that if, one has experienced a great amount of water damage. They consult, with an IICRC-certified professional to have restoration work completed on the property.

The IICRC which is an acronym for the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification, has certain guidelines that are followed by mold and water restoration companies. Updated editions are often released that keep industry professionals appraised of the most pragmatic and efficient remediation tools and exercises.

In the 3rd edition, the s500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration, there are references to the appropriate amount of drying equipment to use on a property, relative to the damage experienced. Various algorithms are used to calculate the appropriate amounts, which are delineated in the following classes:

  •  Class 1 (Smallest volume of water, absorption, and evaporation): An area or portion of the property that is only minimally affected by the water There is no observable damp carpeting in the area.
  • Class 2 (A large amount of water, absorption, and evaporation): An entire room or large area can be affected by the water including damp carpets
  • Class 3 (Greatest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation): Large areas are saturated by water: this includes ceilings, walls, and any other overhead areas.
  • Class 4 (Specifically drying situations): These consist of wet materials with very low porosity (e.g. hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, lightweight concrete, and stone). These types of losses may require longer drying times and special methods.

The appropriate drying method would be determined based on an inspection. According to industry experts, the most common 'class' documented is Class 2. The following levels of drying are associated with each class:

    • Class 1:  Closed drying system i.e. not requiring outside air, whilst employing a dehumidifier.
    • Class 2: Water is first extracted from porous materials and materials which have absorbed water by using a sub-surface extraction tool. Dehumidifiers should be installed in the immediate area. Create a drying chamber and install air movers in the room. Ensure all wet materials are completely removed and heavily damaged materials (such as heavy water-damaged carpeting), are removed and replaced.
    • Class 3: Consult with a certified professional since this type of damage is considered 'severe'.
    • Class 4: Consult with a certified professional since this type of damage is considered 'severe'.

Different Types of Water Damage in W Babylon

10/21/2024 (Permalink)

Buckled Flooring Water damage caused floor to buckle due to water and moisture left on flooring before dry out began.

Water damage in our local neighborhoods can originate from different sources. A dishwasher hose, washing machine issue, burst pipe, storm flood and toilet overflow or toilet clog. The EPA reports 13.7% of all water used in the home today can be attributed to plumbing issues. That is approximately 10,000 gallons of water per year wasted by leaks for each US home. A tiny, 1/8-inch crack in a pipe can release up to 250 gallons of water a day. Sources, in August 2000, stated broken water pipes ranked second to hurricanes in terms of both the number of homes damaged and the number of claims.  Experts suggest that homeowners inspect and replace worn pipe fittings and hose connections to all household appliances that use water at least once a year. This should include washing machines, dishwashers, kitchen sinks, bathroom toilets, refrigerator ice makers, and humidifiers. A number of insurance companies offer policy holders reduced rates for installing a whole-house leak protection system.

As far as insurance coverage is concerned, most damage caused by bad weather is considered flood damage and normally is not covered under homeowners' insurance. Coverage for bad weather would usually require flood insurance.  Please contact your insurance company with regards to your own policy.

3 Steps You Need To Take When You Have A Pipe Break

8/1/2024 (Permalink)

1. Stay Calm

If you happen to come home or go to your place of business and have experienced a flood it is normal to panic. Try your best not to.  Instead, remain calm as you face the problem of water in your home or business. It will better for everyone involved with water cleanup, mitigation, and drying performed. SERVPRO of Babylon/Deer Park will ensure your flooded home or business is returned to its normal state, but panicking won't make this happen faster. Remember that people all over have dealt with water in their flooded home or business. You, too, can handle this. We promise.

2. Get to Safety

When you have a supply line break, you might be tempted to try to fix it yourself. Keep in mind that a break is nothing to face on your own.  Water in your Babylon/Deer Park home or business can quickly become a hazard, so it's important that you leave the area with water damage as quickly as possible. Water damage isn't simply structural. When you have a pipe break, the area becomes prone to mold growth and insects, as well. A restoration company can handle water cleanup, mitigation, and drying.

3. Call a Professional Restoration Company

Your home or business may have flood damage after a pipe break, but a restoration company can help with water in your home. Flood damage can manifest itself visibly, but you may also have structural damage that a restoration company can notify you about after mitigation, water cleanup, drying, and restoration. While the flood damage in your home or business might seem impossible when it comes to water cleanup and drying, the truth is that your restoration expert has seen this problem before, and they are fully equipped to handle this situation.

No homeowner or business owner wants to deal with flood damage, but unfortunately, flooding does happen. If you find yourself in a situation where you have river flooding or a pipe breaks, remember that you aren't alone. SERVPRO of Babylon/Deer Park is ready to help you with mitigation to prevent flood damage from happening to you again. SERVPRO of Babylon/ Deer Park will work with you to ensure you're safe and that your home or business is repaired after the damage.

How to Choose a Restoration Professional

The person or company you use to restore your home or business after serious flooding should have experience handling water cleanup specifically. While most companies are familiar with handling a variety of damage issues, make sure you ask if the company is ready to assist with cleanup after water damage caused by a pipe breaking. When you reach out to the company, you need to provide as much information as possible. Was the flood water in your home or business caused by a pipe break? Has your area recently experienced high rainfall? Did a nearby dam break? If you aren't sure what caused the water buildup in your home or business, just let the company know and they will work with you to create a plan that will remove the excess water from your building and help you get back to your normal life.

1) Q: Is it a good idea to clean up and dry out the water damage myself?

A: IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO NOT! Our crew specifically sets up your property to dry it efficiently and properly. By opening up windows and doors it can cause drying problems based on weather conditions. Also, do not turn on the air conditioner or heat during the drying process.

What To Do If You Find Water In The Basement

12/12/2017 (Permalink)

Pipe leak in the ceiling caused plenty of damage in this sunroom in Amityville, New York.

One of the worst nightmares for any homeowner is finding water in the basement, and in most cases, the only way to deal with such a situation is to bring in a professional. Excess water, especially when it is contaminated, has the potential to cause a great deal of damage, and if the problem is not dealt with properly, the situation can quickly get out of hand. This is especially true when water is pooling in the home and coming in contact with organic materials like drywall or fabric.

Water in the basement can be caused by a lot of factors. The room may sit under the water table, which will slowly push water into the home. A disaster like a flood can quickly fill the room with fluid, as well as a burst pipe or other plumbing mishap. No matter what causes the water to build up in the home, it will take a certified team to remove it and restore the basement effectively.

There are a couple steps, though, that a homeowner can take to minimize damage and make the home safe to navigate through. If a pipe burst or is leaking, then cutting off the supply line into the home can halt the problem. Also, switching off the home’s power may be necessary, as an electrical discharge can make walking through water exceedingly dangerous and cause a fire.

Safety is the primary concern when contending with excess moisture, and a certified crew will be able to get the home restored in while avoiding any dangerous situations.

How A Water Restoration Technician Assists After Disaster

12/12/2017 (Permalink)

Pipe leak from a screw that was there for 10 years and just now gave way.

A water restoration technician has an extremely important job when a home is affected by excess moisture or fluid. Certified professionals in the industry can quickly reverse the extensive damage that a flood or sewage backflow can cause, and save as many items as possible in the process. And when dealing with contaminated fluids, especially when it has pooled in the home, only certified professionals should be allowed to manage the cleanup. Attempting to perform cleanup efforts without expert assistance can lead to injury or illness, both of which can be severe.

A certified water restoration technician will usually be on call around the clock, except for those times when an entire community has been affected by a major disaster. As soon as a professional is on site, they will assess the situation and determine what items need immediate rescuing. If fluid has pooled in areas around the home, then pumps will be used to remove it.

The home will be dried using a configuration of heavy duty air movers and dehumidifiers, and while it dries, the firm will move through the building and look for any evidence of mold or pathogen contamination. If pathogens or mold are present, they will be eliminated using special  procedures. This will ensure the home is safe to return to, and with concerted drying efforts, the building will as good as new once professionals have completed their work.

What is covered

11/15/2017 (Permalink)

A restaurant in West Babylon

Most people believe that when they buy homeowner’s or commercial property insurance that they will be covered for any damage that may occur to their property.  Unfortunately, as many people have painfully learned during recent flooding events, the normal policy of homeowner’s property insurance does NOT provide coverage for damage caused by “rising water” or flood.  This realization often comes too late for property owners and only after catastrophic damage has occurred to their property due to a flooding event.

The usual policy of homeowner’s insurance will only cover storm related water damage if it is caused by “wind blown” water, as opposed to “rising” water.  A good example of “wind blown” water would be water that comes through a broken window or a roof opening caused by the storm.  On the other hand, damage caused by the buildup of rain water which eventually enters the structure and causes flooding-type damage would not be covered under the standard policy of homeowner’s insurance.

As can be easily imagined, disputes often arise between property owners and their insurance companies over whether damage was caused by “rising” water as opposed to “wind blown” water.  The property insurance company, obviously, would like to prove that the damage is from a flood event – and thereby not covered under its insurance policy – whereas the property owner would advocate that the damage was the result of water entering through an opening in the structure and thereby covered under the policy.

The best and safest course of action is for all property owners to obtain both property insurance and flood insurance – regardless of whether or not their structure is located in a flood zone.  If you ever find yourself in a dispute with your property insurance company as to whether your damage is covered under your insurance policy.

Water and sewage

Always Call A Water Damage Service For Repairs

A water damage restoration service is the kind of professional that no one wants to call, but when they are needed, it is important not to delay. Homeowners know that moisture is often the enemy, capable of penetrating into just about any space, and taking advantage of every little crack and structural problem. No matter how moisture gets into the building, the response should be the same. Bring in a certified firm as soon as possible to clean the home, dry it, and ensure there are no lingering health threats once the moisture is gone.

If water has entered the home through a contaminated source, don’t try to handle it on your own. Floods and sewage backflows contain a cocktail of deadly bacteria, viruses and fungi, and even momentary skin contact can leave a person seriously ill. A certified water damage restoration service not only has the tools to eliminate the moisture, they have the protective equipment to remain free from harm.

Restoration technicians have a lot of technology at their disposal. These include powerful vacuums and pumping systems, high volume air movers, dehumidifiers, heat injectors, moisture meters, and a number of detergents formulated for destroying fungi and other microbial threats. While the technicians work on the building, disposing of compromised materials, and drying the rest, they will also destroy all mold and microbial colonies. This is the only way to ensure a home is safe to live, and a business safe to work in; any other cleaning method is a dangerous gamble.

The effects of water damage

12/12/2016 (Permalink)

Never under estimate the damage that water can cause

Water damage is a problem that most property owners dread. When it rains heavily or snow melts quickly, the risk of this type of damage increases. Water can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage by damaging wood furniture, upholstery, electronics, household appliances, and plumbing equipment. Water damage also increases the risk of mold growth, which is a very expensive problem to remediate. Hiring a water damage restoration company can make the cleanup process easier to handle, as these companies employ experienced workers who know the best ways to repair or replace damaged items and help with water damage cleanup.

Causes of Water Damage

There are several possible causes of water damage. Leaky dishwashers, clogged toilets, broken pipes, broken dishwasher hoses, overflowing washing machines, leaky roofs, plumbing leaks, and foundation cracks are just some of the possible causes of water damage in homes and businesses. Floods, heavy snow, and heavy rain are other possible causes of this type of damage and can lead to having water in basements. Too much water can lead to minor problems such as water in basement areas, or it can lead to the destruction of homes and businesses. Once a home or business sustains water damage, it is important to start the water damage cleanup immediately. Starting water damage cleanup as soon as possible increases the likelihood of saving water-soaked furniture, carpets, rugs, clothing, and other items.

Categories of Water Damage

Assessing the severity of the damage is important for determining what is needed to start water damage repair and water removal. There are several different categories assigned to water damage. Category 1 refers to clean water, or water that does not pose a threat to humans. Possible causes of this type of damage include broken appliances or sink overflows. Category 2 water is also called gray water. This means that the water is contaminated and may cause sickness of ingested. This type of water contains microorganisms. Broken toilets, broken sump pumps, and seepage may cause category 2 water damage. Category 3 water is known as black water. This type of water is unsanitary, as it contains bacteria and other organisms that cause sickness. The possible sources of black water damage include sewage problems and contamination of standing water.

There are also several classes of water damage. The class of damage is important when assessing water damage repair options. Class 1 is the least harmful form of damage. Materials absorb very little of the water from this type of damage. Water damage repair is the easiest in this type of situation. Class 2 has a fast rate of evaporation, which means that carpets and cushions may be damaged. Water damage repair is more difficult when it involves class 2 damage. Class 3 has the fastest rate of evaporation. In this case, the water may come from broken sprinklers or other overhead sources, soaking the walls and furniture. Class 4 requires special water restoration and water removal procedures. This type of damage may affect hardwood floors, plaster, and concrete.

Restoration Process

The water restoration process is an important one. Using the right procedures and materials can help people save cherished belongings and even prevent their homes from being condemned. Water restoration companies specialize in mitigating the effects of water, but the success for water damage restoration depends on the severity of the damage and the amount of water that caused the damage. Water restoration companies may hire outside experts to assess a property and determine a water restoration and water removal plan. These water restoration companies typically use high-tech equipment and well-documented procedures to control water damage. Water in basement areas may only require a short cleanup process, but water in other areas of a property will require extensive remediation.

Health Hazards

t is important to hire one of these water damage restoration companies as soon as possible after water damage occurs. Moisture promotes the growth of mold and other organisms, increasing the risk for serious health problems. Mold exposure may aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms, especially in children and people with compromised immune systems. Exposure may also increase the risk for respiratory diseases and other medical problems. Cleaning up immediately can help mitigate the health effects of water damage on everyone in a home or commercial space.
